Diabetic Neuropathy

Diabetic Neuropathy is nerve damage caused by diabetes in which there are high levels of sugar in the blood. Over time, high blood sugar levels can damage nerves in the feet. This, in turn, may make patients less able to feel injury or pressure on the skin of their feet. They may not notice a foot injury until severe damage or infection develops. Ulcers and infections can be very difficult to treat. Chronic infections, disability and amputations can result. Chronic and severe knee pain can also occur characterized by burning, stinging, and numbness. This can be a life-threatening disease or injury. Please seek your medical professional’s advice.

Working in conjunction with your medical professional includes careful daily foot inspections and professional and basic foot care. Properly fit shoes are extremely important. Supportive shoes that breathe well and have no sources for friction to the foot are known as Depth Footwear.

Orthotics to redistribute pressure and friction can provide high levels of cushioning and protection. Our Pressure Relief insole features medical-grade plastazote cover that is extremely soft with a pillow like feel. Wearing socks with shoes can offer additional padding and protection. We offer many socks that are made with moisture management qualities to help keep feet dry. If swelling is a problem, we also offer Extra-Wide Socks.

Custom orthoses are often recommended by doctors when over-the-counter solutions don’t work. Our certified pedorthists can fill your medical professional’s prescription for custom orthoses and support your doctor’s recovery plan.
