Pronation

Pronation is an essential and normal foot motion, from foot strike on the outside of the heel through the inward roll of the foot. Most people pronate because at heel strike, pronation is how the foot adapts to the ground and absorbs shock of contact.

Overpronation is a condition most commonly associated with flexible, low arches. Usually there is some degree of hypermobility in the foot, such as the ligaments being loose and the joints allowed to undergo more range of motion than they need to.

Excessive or prolonged pronation can cause a number of abnormal stresses on the back, hip, knee, leg, ankle and foot such as bunions, heel pain, hammertoes, shin splints, Achilles tendinitis, knee pain, back pain, general fatigue, in grown toenails and neuromas – just to name a few. Over pronators will wear out shoes along the medial (inside arch and heel area) of shoes.

Good stability or motion control shoes that include medial posting can support heel motion and a natural stride. Proper insoles for pronation such as the Motion Control insole can help fortify feet with proper foot alignment. The Stability Insole can also help with alignment and is designed for medium-to-high arches.

Custom orthoses are often recommended by doctors when over-the-counter solutions don’t work. Our certified pedorthists can fill your medical professional’s prescription for custom orthoses and support your doctor’s recovery plan.
